Children can compare and contrast their own faces to some of Sunny sunflowers friends. If they can’t see their own face in the pictures – why not try a self portrait?

Learning about plants and growth
The following exercise has been prepared by an early year’s expert from NDNA providing an in depth look at how sunflower and growth related subjects can be integrated into the nursery year.

Adult led activities

The seasons are a time of change and provide an abundance of opportunities to enhance children’s knowledge and understanding about the living world. Growing sunflowers is always a popular activity in the early years.

Prepare for the activity by talking to children about the different plants, flowers and vegetation growing in the surrounding home or nursery environment. Introduce the children to specimens of seeds, seedlings and sunflowers.

Discuss what might be needed to make the seeds grow into sunflowers and why.

Talk about the seasons, conditions for growth and the relevance of spring. Invite a local gardener, keen gardening parent or grandparent to help with the “planting out day” and create a sunflower suntrap.
