Taking part in The Sunflower Challenge couldn’t be easier, but, as a helping hand, here is a timetable of sunflower events:
11 March 2004 Nursery World launches The Sunflower Challenge, providing sunflower seeds with each copy of the magazine.
11 March 2004 Nurseries plant their seeds, either into small pots for germination or directly into the ground, when all chance of frost is over.
Get family and friends to sponsor the growth of your sunflowers.
Maybe set aside time to consider the importance of water, and how not having water on tap would change your life.
June 2004 Grand planting out day – a fun-filled day when seedlings can be planted into the nursery garden, this is a good opportunity to send press releases to your local media. Everyone likes a happy story!
31 August 2004
September 2004 When your sunflowers are fully grown arrange a ‘Grand measuring day’. Arrange a celebratory ‘Sunflower yellow tea party’ in recognition of all your hard work. Invite friends and families, maybe local celebrities or your MP – and don’t forget to let the local papers know.

October 2004 Collect your sponsor money and send it into WaterAid. Sit back and wait for your certificate to arrive – you can display this on the Nursery wall to remember the fun you had growing sunflowers!
