Publicity Notes: Sunflower Challenge 2004

Who can take part? | Sponsor Forms | Promotional posters | If you need more seeds | How to promote your Nursery

First of all, a big thank you for taking part in this year’s Sunflower Challenge. We’re hoping that this year is going to be our most successful yet!

This money will be spent in league with our partner organisations in Malawi, where WaterAid has been working since November 1999.

We’re aiming to raise £20,000 from the sponsorship money in 2004 - this would be enough to help over 1,300 people in Malawi, providing them with a lasting supply of clean water and sanitation. Of course, the more people who know about your nursery taking part, the more money you can raise, so here’s a quick guide for spreading the word through the local media.

Ready Made Press releases:

To save you time, we’ve written three fill-in-the-gaps press releases to help you raise awareness of the Sunflower Challenge in your area.

These are three stages:

General tips:

    When targeting the local media, a good general rule is to send news releases out one or two weeks in advance of the event. This gives time for weekly newspapers/radio stations to book in some space for you.

    At each stage, once you’ve adapted the release to your own choir/area, send it to:

      Local newspapers (fax or email to the news desk – if you can, find out the name of you local contact)

      Local radio station (usually a BBC radio station, so contact details can be found via www.bbc.co.uk/whereilive website)

      Your local area’s website (…if there is one! A good place to start is on www.myvillage.co.uk)

    Follow up any faxed or emailed news releases with a phone call. This is to see if the recipient…

      1) has seen the news release (you'll be amazed how many haven't), you many therefore need to send again;

      2) is interested in the event – they probably will be – local papers love children/charity/flowers;

      3) would like more information. Direct them to the WaterAid website.
