The Sunflower Challenge 2004 is now completed. A big thank-you to the nurseries who got involved with the life changing work of WaterAid - in so many fun and exciting ways.
THANK YOU!
The Sunflower Challenge was first launched in 2002 when WaterAid first came to the attention of Rosemary Murphy, CEO of the National Day Nurseries Association. Over the last two years the Challenge has raised over £23,000. This money has been used to provide some of the poorest people in Africa and Asia with a brighter, healthier future – through the provision of the most basic of needs – water.
This year, all monies raised from The Sunflower Challenge have been channelled into our work in Malawi, one of the poorest countries in Africa (for more information on WaterAid’s work in Malawi click here)
How did they grow so tall ?!
These were the three stages:
- Launch – seed planting time: April
- Planting out – seedlings outside time: June
- Grand Measuring Day/tea party event time: September
The children planted the ‘Russian Giant’ sunflower seeds sent by Nursery World, one of the promoters of The Sunflower Challenge. Children watered them and cared for them and when the plants were large enough, the children planted them into their nursery gardens and watched them grow.
The seeds were known to each be capable of reaching a whopping ten feet tall but some of them grew much taller!
In September the Sunflowers had reached the peak of their growth and we received many photos of your ‘Grand Measuring Day’ - click here for the results!
