Water is one of the most precious gifts we have, but it is one which we often take for granted. In many developing countries the story is quite different. The lack of clean water is a killer, and children often spend large parts of their day transporting water vast distances just to survive.
Every 15 seconds a child in the developing world will die from diseases caused by unsafe water, furthermore diseases which can be easily prevented.
Today – one quarter of the world’s population do not have access to safe water.
It is difficult to comprehend statistics such as these when we have as much safe, clean water as we need by simply turning on a tap.
Throughout Africa and Asia it is often the children, and in particular girls, that shoulder the responsibility for collecting the family’s water supply. Water sources may be several kilometres from people’s homes meaning a long walk to reach the water and then only being able to collect as much water as can be physically carried.
